Safety Management Plans (SMP)

A Safety Management Plan (SMP) is a comprehensive document that outlines how safety is managed in a specific environment, such as a construction site. It’s designed to provide clear procedures and responsibilities to manage work health and safety issues.

A SMP typically includes:

  • Names and roles: The names and positions of individuals with specific health and safety responsibilities, such as site supervisors, project managers, and first aid officers.
  • Consultation arrangements: Outline how consultation, cooperation, and coordination between various parties will be managed.
  • Incident management: The procedures for managing WHS incidents that occur at the workplace.
  • Site-specific rules: Any specific health and safety rules for the site, and how these rules will be communicated to workers.
  • Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS): Detail how SWMS will be collected, assessed, monitored, and reviewed.

Additional information that may be included in an SMP can cover areas such as hazardous chemicals management, plant safety, traffic management, essential services information, workplace security, public safety, and worker training and licensing.

The specifics of an SMP can vary depending on the nature of the work and the local regulatory requirements. It’s always a good idea to consult with a WHS professional when developing an SMP.
